GeekWord – Phishing

Phishing – [fish-ing] noun

A technique used to gain access to your personal information for fraudulent purposes. The technique uses convincing emails directing you to log in to a site that you normally use such as eBay, Facebook, PayPal or even your bank. By clicking on the link in the email, you are unknowingly directed to a fake server that records the information that you enter, such as usernames and passwords. This information is then used for financial or other fraud.

I got an email from eBay the other day saying that my account was compromised, the link took me to a site that just didn’t look right. I realized right away that it was a phishing email.
