DragonCon – T-Minus 7 Days

A few weeks back I gave you a run down on what DragonCon is all about, and now it’s nearly here! At the end of last year’s Con, we had all but made up our minds that we weren’t going to attend this year, but when it came time to cancel our hotel reservation, we decided that we just couldn’t stay away.

Thankfully, the organizers are saying that they’ve addressed many of the issues that pushed us to consider staying away. The biggest gripe we had last year, which was shared by most everyone, was the painfully long line to pick up our pre-paid badges. We (mostly) patiently waited in a 3-4 hour line in the downtown Atlanta heat to pick up badges that we had paid for months earlier. The entire process was a nightmare of being herded through lines, separated by last initial and waiting for our names to be looked up in a book where a label with our info had been pre-printed. That label was affixed to our badge and we were on our way.

As you can imagine, it wasn’t the most efficient process, some agents would be slammed while others had no one in their last name based lines. This year the Con has implemented an electronic system that involves scanning a bar code that was mailed out to us and printing the labels on demand. This allows any agent to help any attendee and should greatly alleviate the long wait in line.

Another big accomplishment for the convention is the introduction of a SmartPhone app. Although it’s developed by an outside source, it’s just what this geek was looking for. The app contains information on every event, guest, vendor, location, etc. With as many options for activities as DragonCon offers, this is great! It’s been so easy to find activities that I want to attend that I’m now double and triple booked for most of the weekend, my next task is editing that list down a bit.

I’m extremely excited about the Con. My personal life has been a bit hectic lately and I’m looking forward to cutting ties to the normal world for a few days.

I’ll be tweeting regularly while there, probably from my personal account @fleabeard. I’ll write a follow up post or two and I’ll share some photos on Facebook. I’ll also be recording some audioboos and some material for the Two True Freaks podcast so feel free to listen in!
